Background

This is a new and exciting project that will place 5 artists in 5 different settings over a period of one year with the outcome of having five visual arts residencies in those settings. This project has now been awarded funding from the Arts Council of England under their Grants for The Arts Scheme.

The artists will be a mixture of emerging ones who may have recently graduated and those who are looking to work within new artistic settings. There would be a preference of those living or just having completed their formal education in Worcestershire. The residencies will be held in non-gallery places each within a public place. Potential ideas for venues include:

• Museum or place of worship
• Public library
• Place of business
• School or other educational setting
• Residential home

The project will be run by 5x5x5=creativity, an independent, arts-based action research organisation which supports children in their exploration and expression of ideas, helping them to develop creative skills for life. For Worcestershire, the organisation has agreed to work with a wide variety of ages and not exclusively children. 5x5x5=creativity place great emphasis on the role of documentation and research. This will ground the project in clear outcomes and outputs resulting in clear benefits for all those who are involved.

5x5x5=creativity has worked in the following places:

Bath, Bristol, North Somerset, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire and London

Who will lead on the project?

The project will be led by Worcestershire County Council’s Arts Service. It will be managed by the Visual Arts Sub Group of the Worcestershire County Council’s Arts Partnership.

How will artists be selected?

Artists will be selected from an application process. Within this process certain criteria will be looked at, these are:

• Interest in the brief including the preferred residency
• Experience and interest in working within a public place
• Experience and interest in working within arts research
• Experience and interest in working collaboratively with children, young people and members of the public

 Is there a fee?

Artists chosen will be paid £2,600 for the work.

What support will the artists have?

The artists will be mentored by two experienced 5x5x5=creativity practitioners throughout the duration of the project and supported by members of the County Visual Arts Sub-group.

What will be expected of the artists chosen?

• To be resident at the chosen venue for a set amount of days per year. This is likely to be 13-15 full days or 26-30 half days.
• To exhibit a body of work, this will be shown at the project’s end.
• To engage and work creatively with members of the public.
• To produce written and photographic documentation about the process and outcomes of the project/residency.
• Selected artists will require to have an up to date CRB enhanced disclosure  and Public Liability Insurance.

What will be expected of the venues?

• To provide a suitable space for use by an artist on agreed days per year.
• To support and promote the residency. Help provide access to the people who attend their venue and to support the creative process of the artist.

What is the time frame?

“We talked quite a lot about the expectations that we may have of the project. I have been thinking of working with objects such as books, particularly the texts of Conrad and Dickens. Rick was saying that he is developing ideas around the periphery of the subject and wants to give that time to develop. Our expectations are that we want to make something satisfying, something which connects us to the place. We have no funding which means that we are not bound to those expectations. I think that I am willing to work towards an exhibition if that was right or to make work that is tangible. However, I am very open to the idea that the end result could be a sound recording for example or a book. We might share one collaborative piece but then add other individual pieces to it.
I think our collaboration is about a dialogue, where we generate discussions around a common theme. At some point it will probably tie up into the work.” Taken from Estuary Dialogue
